Javier Assad makes 2023 Opening Day roster spot for Cubs

by - Senior Editor -

Big news for a Cubs youngster.

Chicago Cubs manager David Ross announced Monday that pitcher Javier Assad has earned himself a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Assad's strong performance for Team Mexico in the WBC has impressed the Cubs' coaching staff, and he will start the season as part of the bullpen.

Last year, Assad started eight games and appeared in one relief appearance as he posted a 3.11 ERA over 37.2 innings.

However, with his velocity reaching 95-97 mph in the WBC and a wipeout curveball, Assad could be a valuable asset in a multi-inning relief role.

While it remains to be seen how he will perform over the course of the season, Assad's potential and versatility make him a valuable asset for the Cubs.

“He’s been really, really good, proving that last year wasn’t just a flash in the pan," Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins said on the Parkins & Spiegel Show recently. "His velocity is up. He’s commanding the ball really well. He’s throwing some great off-speed stuff and then certainly is doing it on the big stage. So at the end of the day, we’re really excited about him. It looks like he’s going to have a good chance to impact us.”

Asaad could also be stretched out to start games in the future if needed, or sent back to Iowa if his performance does not meet expectations.

With his talent and potential, he could be a key player in the Cubs' success this season.
