CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitchers Daniel Winkler and Brandon Workman from the COVID-19 related injured list. In corresponding moves, right-handed pitcher Pedro Strop was returned to the South Bend Alternate Site and left-handed pitcher Justin Steele has been optioned to the alternate site.

Winkler, 31, has no record with a 2.25 ERA (1 ER/4.0 IP) in five relief appearances for the Cubs this season, walking four, striking out five and allowing two hits in 18 batters faced. Since signing a major league deal with Chicago in December of 2019, Winkler has posted a 2.82 ERA (7 ER/22.1 IP) with two holds in 23 relief outings for the Cubs, walking 15, striking out 23 and recording a 1.25 WHIP.

In all or part of seven seasons with the Braves (2015-19) and Cubs, Winkler is 8-2 with two saves, 35 holds and a 3.52 ERA (48 ER/122.2 IP) in 140 career relief appearances. He has walked 58 and struck out 138, good for an average of 9.3 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched.

Workman, 32, is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA (2 ER/3.2 IP) in four outings for Chicago, walking two and striking out five. The right-hander signed a one-year minor league contract with the Cubs on February 18 after pitching in 21 games with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies in 2020, going a combined 1-4 with a 5.95 ERA (13 ER/19.2 IP). Workman is 25-21 with a 3.90 ERA (132 ER/304.2 IP) in 213 career appearances.

Both Winkler and Workman were placed on the COVID-19 related injured list on April 12.

Strop, 35, has appeared in two games out of the bullpen this season, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. The right-hander re-joined the Cubs organization on a minor league deal this offseason after pitching for the Reds in 2020.

Steele, 25, made his major league debut on April 12 at Milwaukee following his recall from the South Bend Alternate Site. The lefthander pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in three appearances, allowing two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
