Cubs manager David Ross announced on Tuesday that Kyle Hendricks will get the Opening Day start on April 1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field.

“It worked out pretty good last year,” Ross said to the media, referring to his complete-game shutout on Opening Day last season. “I don't know that I was expecting that last year, and it worked out well. I feel like we've got a lot of talent. I feel like Kyle, his resume his leadership, his poise, just the extra pomp and circumstance that goes with opening day and especially on this coming year, every arrow points to Kyle.”

Hendricks getting the start is not really a shock to most observers paying attention.

It will be his second consecutive Opening Day start for the Northsiders as he is now the gem of the pitching staff.

In 2020, Hendricks had a 6-5 record with a 2.88 ERA with 64 strikeouts and a sparkling 1.00 WHIP. After the season, he was voted 9th in the CY Young voting.

He has a 69-48 record for his career with an impressive 3.12 ERA with 882 strikeouts and 1.10 WHIP.
