Cubs call up Adbert Alzolay to start second game of doubleheader

The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay from the club’s South Bend Alternate Site. He will serve as the “29th man” today for the club’s doubleheader today vs. the St. Louis Cardinals.

Alzolay, who will wear uniform number 73, will be the starting pitcher for the second game today against St. Louis at Wrigley Field as the clubs conclude their five-game series.

Alzolay, 25, made his major league debut last season and went 1-1 with a 7.30 ERA (10 ER/12.1 IP) in four appearances (two starts) with the Cubs. He went 2-4 with a 4.41 ERA (32 ER/65.1 IP) in 15 starts with Iowa last season, recording 91 strikeouts 65.1 innings pitched while limiting foes to a .215 batting average.

The righthander was originally signed by the Cubs at the age of 18 as a non-drafted free agent in 2012. A native of Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, Alzolay has go 33-27 with a 1.16 WHIP and 3.63 ERA (198 ER/491.0 IP) in 105 appearances, 84 as a starter, covering seven seasons in the Cubs minor league system.
