Latest with Nicholas Castellanos in free agency

Not ideal news for Cubs fans wanting more big signings this offseason.

MLB insider Jon Morosi reported that there is a new clubhouse leader for Nicholas Castellanos's services for 2020 and beyond.

"The Reds have emerged as the frontrunner to sign free-agent outfielder Nicholas Castellanos, one source said Sunday, and there are indications the sides have made progress over the past several days," Morosi wrote. "While Cincinnati is now the favorite to sign Castellanos, the Giants also have negotiated with the 27-year-old in recent weeks."

With this tidbit of information, the reported signing of outfielder Steven Souza, and the Cubs trying to get under the luxury tax for 2020, it appears that a reunion with Castellanos and the Cubs is looking more and more unlikely as the days go by. Castellanos is a tremendous hitter but it appears that the Cubs will just hope for some progression from Kyle Scharber, Ian Happ, Albert Almora Jr., and others in the outfield.

In 2019, Castellanos hit .289 with 27 homers and 73 RBIs. However, he was absolutely unstoppable with the Cubs hitting 16 dingers in only 51 games.
