NEW YORK – The Chicago Cubs today placed outfielder Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib cage strain and recalled infielder Jeimer Candelario from Triple-A Iowa.

Candelario, who will wear uniform number seven, will be available for the Cubs this afternoon as they conclude their four-game series against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The 22-year-old Candelario joins the first major league roster of his career after batting .333 (25-for-75) with seven doubles, two triples, three home runs and 15 RBI in 25 games with Iowa. He has turned in a .452 on-base percentage and .600 slugging percentage, good for a 1.052 OPS. He was recently named to represent the Cubs on the World Team at the Futures Game next month at the All-Star Game in San Diego. Candelario has combined to hit .249 (71-for-285) with 24 doubles, seven home runs and 38 RBI in 81 games between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa.

The switch-hitter began the 2015 campaign at high-A ball with Myrtle Beach and earned Carolina League All-Star honors plus his first promotion to Double-A as he combined to hit .277 (132-for-476) with 35 doubles, 10 homers and 64 RBI in 128 games between Myrtle Beach and Tennessee. He was named a 2015 Arizona Fall League Rising Star after batting .329 (27-for-82) with eight doubles, five homers, 15 RBI, a .371 on-base percentage and a .610 slugging percentage, good for a .981 OPS, in 21 games for the Mesa Solar Sox.

Candelario entered 2016 ranked by Baseball America as the 10th-best prospect in the Cubs minor league system and then excelled during his first-career stop at Triple-A. He signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2010 and has batted .265 (596-2,250) with 153 doubles, 15 triples, 50 homers and 322 RBI in 607 minor league games covering the last six seasons.
