Cubs option Luke Farrell to Triple-A, recall RHP

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Cory Mazzoni from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell to Triple-A Iowa.

Mazzoni, who will wear uniform number 60, will be available for the Cubs tonight when they play their series opener against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field.

The 28-year-old Mazzoni has gone 0-2 with a 2.31 ERA (3 ER/11.2 IP) in eight relief appearances for Iowa this season. He has struck out 12 and walked only one batter in 11.2 innings pitched. Mazzoni was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on November 6, 2017 from the San Diego Padres, was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 27 and claimed off waivers again by the Cubs on March 29. He has 14 major league relief appearances to his credit with San Diego (2015, 2017), posting no record and a 17.28 ERA (32 ER/16.2 IP).

Overall, Mazzoni is 27-17 with seven saves and a 3.74 ERA (157 ER/377.2 IP) in 124 career minor league appearances, 53 as a starter. He spent most of the 2017 campaign in the minors, combining to go 2-0 with one save and a 0.59 ERA (2 ER/30.1 IP) in 23 relief appearances. He struck out 48 batters and walked only three in 30.1 innings pitched. Mazzoni made 14 appearances with Triple-A El Paso, going 1-0 with one save and a 0.89 ERA (2 ER/20.1 IP).

Mazzoni is a native of Evans City, Penn. and was originally selected by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2011 Draft out of North Carolina State University.

Farrell, 26, is 1-2 with a 7.94 ERA (5 ER/5.2 IP) in six relief appearances with the Cubs this season and is 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA (7 ER/10.2 IP) in two starts with Iowa this year.
