Cubs recall righty pitcher, place Jordan Wicks on 15-day IL

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter from Triple-A Iowa and placed left-handed pitcher Jordan Wicks on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain (retroactive to Sept. 18).

Wingenter, 30, has made three appearances with the Cubs this season, pitching to a 4.50 ERA (2 ER/4.0 IP), since being claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on August 2. With the I-Cubs, he has posted a 1-1 record with one save, a 2.79 ERA (3 ER/9.2 IP) and a 0.83 WHIP in eight outings.

The six-foot seven-inch Huntsville, Ala., native is 2-3 with one save and a 5.79 ERA (60 ER/93.1 IP) in 95 major league games across parts of four seasons with the San Diego Padres (2018-19), Detroit Tigers (2023), Boston Red Sox (2024) and Chicago Cubs (2024). He was drafted by the Padres in the 17th round of the 2015 MLB Draft and made his major league debut August 7, 2018, vs. Milwaukee.

Wicks, 25, was reinstated from the 60-day injured list (right oblique strain) on September 1 and made four starts since his return, going 1-2 with a 7.50 ERA (15 ER/18.0 IP).

The Cubs play the Washington Nationals today at 1:20 p.m. CT at Wrigley Field in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 The Score and in Spanish on WRTO 1200.
