Cubs select catcher Luis Torrens from Triple-A Iowa |
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected catcher Luis Torrens from Triple-A Iowa.
Torrens, 26, last season hit .225 (34-for-151) with two doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI in 57 games with Seattle. In 10 games in September and October with the Mariners, he went 6-for-20 (.300) with a .400 on-base percentage and .600 slugging percentage after being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. He also appeared in 16 games with Tacoma, hitting .279 (17-for-61) with five doubles, three home runs, 15 RBI and a .324 OBP. Torrens, originally signed by the Yankees in June of 2016, has a .226 average (159-for-704) with 27 doubles, three triples, 19 homers, 75 RBI and 61 walks in 251 career major league games over parts of five seasons with the Padres (2017, 2019-20) and Mariners (2020-22). He has a career .996 fielding percentage with four errors in 1,051 total chances, primarily as a catcher. Torrens has hit .270 (418-for-1,548) with 99 doubles, seven triples, 37 home runs, 222 RBI and a .341 OBP in 417 minor league games in the Yankees, Padres and Mariners systems. The six-foot tall native of Valencia, Venezuela, was signed by the Cubs to a minor league contract, Jan. 20, 2023. Cubs have officially selected the contract of C Luis Torrens from Triple-A Iowa. He'll be a third-string behind Gomes and Barnhart. Chicago did not want to lose Torrens to another team. Intrigued by his bat.
