Cubs top catching prospect Miguel Amaya reportedly joining team

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs catching prospect Miguel Amaya has reportedly been promoted to the major leagues after the team’s starting catcher Yan Gomes was hit in the back of the head with a backswing during Monday’s game.

The extent of Gomes’ injury is still unclear, but the Cubs are preparing for the possibility that he may need to spend time on the injured list. As a result, the Cubs have called up Amaya from the minors to provide depth behind the plate.

According to Mark Gonzales, a sports writer for the Chicago Tribune, the 24-year-old backstop will join the Cubs in Washington DC. Amaya has had a tumultuous few seasons, having missed most of the previous three years due to the pandemic, elbow reconstruction, a dislocated finger, and a Lisfranc fracture.

Despite these setbacks, has been raking this season.

Through 56 plate appearances in the minors this season, Amaya has been impressive with a .273 batting average, a 1.060 OPS, and four home runs, all of which are good for a 182 wRC.

Amaya was signed by the Cubs as an international free agent in 2015 when he was just 16 years old. He has since developed into one of the organization’s top prospects, thanks to his excellent defensive skills and a solid bat.

It will be exciting to see how he performs in the big leagues and whether he can live up to his potential as one of the top prospects in the organization.
