Two Cubs pitchers Brandon Hughes, Codi Heuer reportedly out for the season

The Chicago Cubs' bullpen has suffered a significant setback with the news that two of their pitchers, Codi Heuer and Brandon Hughes are expected to miss the remainder of the season due to injuries.

The loss of these key players is undoubtedly a blow to the team as they navigate their way to challenge for a postseason spot.

Heuer underwent surgery that will sideline him for the rest of the year.

He had surgery to repair a fractured elbow, while Hughes is scheduled to undergo a procedure called a distal femoral osteotomy to realign his left knee.

Heuer was injured throwing during a Triple-A game during a rehab outing on Wednesday.

We all saw it,” President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer told reporters Friday. “You knew in real time that he’d done something serious. And my heart breaks for him given how hard he worked to get back.”

As for Hughes, his injury has kept him out of action since June 11. He had a 7.24 ERA and 17 Ks this season.

“He’s never really gotten consistently to where he was last year with mechanics because of his knee,” Hoyer said. “And he’s fought so hard to get out there. He’s such a competitor. But it finally got to a point where it’s like, we’re just going to keep taking one step forward, one step back over and over.”

The Cubs bullpen will need to rally together and find ways to compensate for the absence of Heuer and Hughes as they were supposed to be big pieces for the backend in 2023.
