CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated outfielder
Joc Pederson from the 10-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher
Keegan Thompson to the South Bend Alternate Site.
Pederson, 29, landed on the 10-day injured list, April 22 (retroactive to April 21), with left wrist tendinitis. He is hitting .137 (7-for-51) with a triple, a home run and four RBI in 16 games in his first season with Chicago. Pederson joined Chicago in February of this year and is a career .228 hitter (503-for-2,204) with 112 doubles, eight triples, 131 home runs and 307 RBI in 764 games in all or part of eight seasons with the Dodgers (2014-20) and Cubs. He owns a .496 slugging percentage with an .844 OPS to go along with 122 home runs and a .236 average (436-for-1,846) against right-handed pitching. Pederson has seen time at all three outfield positions, playing 412 games in center field, 244 games in left field and 56 games in right field, as well as 20 games at first base. Pederson, who batted .190 (23-for-121) with seven home runs and 16 RBI in 43 games last season, set career marks during the 2019 campaign with 83 runs, 112 hits, 36 home runs, 74 RBI, a .249 batting average, a .538 slugging percentage and an .876 OPS in 149 games. His 36 home runs that season came against right-handed pitching and nine of the home runs were of the leadoff variety. Thompson, 26, made his major league debut yesterday in Cincinnati tossing a scoreless inning. The Cubs third round pick in the 2017 draft out Auburn University, Thompson is 10-10 with a 3.46 ERA (61 ER/158.2 IP) with 151 strikeouts in 35 career games (29 starts) in the minor leagues.
