NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Chicago Cubs today selected right-handed pitcher Cade Horton from Triple-A Iowa. In corresponding moves, left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove was optioned to Triple-A Iowa and right-handed pitcher Eli Morgan has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Horton, looking to make his major league debut, will wear uniform number 22 and is available for tonight’s 6:15 p.m. CT game against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Horton, 23, has pitched to a 2-1 record with a 1.24 ERA (4 ER/29.0 IP), 33 strikeouts and a 0.86 WHIP across six starts with Iowa this season. His 33 strikeouts pace all I-Cubs pitchers and his WHIP ranks second. The righty has held opposing hitters to a .129 batting average (12-for-93), the lowest among Iowa starters this season. He has not allowed more than one run or three hits in any of his six outings this season.

The six-foot one-inch Horton made nine starts in 2024 for Triple-A Iowa (five starts) and Double-A Tennessee (four starts), recording a combined 4.46 ERA (17 ER/34.1 IP) before landing on the injured list with a season-ending shoulder injury. He owns a career 2.79 ERA (47 ER/151.2 IP) with 190 strikeouts, compared to 53 walks, and 11.30 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched in 36 games (all starts) across three minor league seasons with the Chicago Cubs organization. Horton was named an MiLB.com Organizational All-Star and Baseball America Minor League All-Star following the 2023 season.

The Oklahoma City, Okla., native was selected by the Cubs in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2022 draft out of the University of Oklahoma. Horton currently ranks as the Cubs’ no. 2 prospect and MLB’s no. 46 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.

Cosgrove, 28, made his second Cubs appearance last night, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing one run.

Morgan, 28, was originally placed on the 15-day injured list on April 15 with a right elbow impingement.

The Cubs play the New York Mets tonight at 6:15 p.m. CT at Citi Field in a game that can be seen on FOX and heard on 670 the Score and, in Spanish, on WRTO 1200 AM.
