Cubs Minor League News: DSL Blue’s late rally steals spotlight |
Another Monday, which means another start to a week of Minor League action as the Cubs Rookie League teams took to the field for another Rookie League Monday. This was one of those days filled with a little of everything as the Cubs managed to pick up a walk-off win to overshadow a shutout, which led them to finish with a 1-1 mark.
Throw in a suspended game that got picked up, and the Cubs went 1-2 for the day, which isn't how you want to start a week. The good news is that a tough overall season is almost complete, as things have been a struggle for all those involved in Rookie League play this season.
In what was game two of what was the resumption of a suspended game, the Cubs' offense was nowhere to be found as they were held to four hits in a 5-0 loss to the Mariners. To their credit, the pitching did their part as four of the Mariners' five runs came in the sixth as this was a 1-0 game up until that point. Luis Ghisays took the tough luck loss in this one after turning in an impressive five-inning start. Ghisays walked one and struck out six across five innings, scattering just three hits before handing things off to the pen. That run came on a third-inning homer from Deuri Castillo as the Mariners grabbed a 1-0 lead and never looked back. That was all Cristian Aray needed as the right-hander struck out six across 5 2/3 innings, allowing no runs and three hits. That 1-0 score held until the sixth inning when the Mariners' offense broke out in a big way as an RBI groundout opened what was a four-run frame to make this a 2-0 game. Elias Perez followed that up with a long three-run bomb to break things open as the Mariners took care of business 5-0. This loss followed an earlier loss as the Mariners took care of business in a previously suspended contest by knocking off the Cubs 6-5. Ivan Cespedes drove in two runs and had two hits in the game.
Talk about an exciting finish if you are a Cubs fan, it was the DSL Blue Squad battling back from multiple deficits to walk off the Cardinals 6-5. Four of those runs came in the eighth inning as the Cubs had to earn every inch of this win. It didn't take the Cubs long to grab the lead as an Enyel Rosario single put the Cubs on top 1-0 in the second. Rosario would come in to score on the Jahni McPhee double as the Cubs opened up a 2-0 lead. With Chaily Ramirez striking out three across 3 2/3 scoreless innings, of one run ball, although that run was unearned, it was looking as if the Cubs would hold on. The Cardinals picked up their first run in the fourth off an error, while a fifth-inning grounder led to a second run as the Cardinals tied things up 2-2. Those were the final runs of regulation as extra innings were needed to decide a winner. Talk about getting hit in the mouth in a big way, the Cardinals delivered a massive blow in the top of the eighth as Yeferson Portolatin connected for a massive bases-loaded double that gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game, 5-2. Not only did the Cubs respond, but they responded in a big way as Daniel Campos opened what was a massive bottom of the eighth with an RBI double to pull within 5-3. That is when the patient approach started to play a massive role in the Cubs' success as a pair of bases-loaded walks to Rosario and Josias Ramirez brought things back to even as the Cubs continued to threaten. DSL Blue capped off their comeback bid a few pitches later as McPhee came through with an RBI single to close out the Cubs' four-run frame as they walked off the Cardinals 6-5.DSL MARINERS 5 - DSL CUBS RED 0
