Cubs Minor League News: DSL Cubs Red rallies for win, DSL Blue blown away |
With the ACL officially over for the Cubs this season, their minor league affiliates have been cut from seven to six, as the DSL squads are the lone remaining Rookie League teams. That doesn't matter as they still deserve some minimal love and will now be the Rookie League Monday focus all by themselves.
Monday was a busier day than usual for the DSL squads, as an early-season rainout led to three games taking place, instead of the usual two. More games mean more chances to rack up the wins as the Cubs' DSL clubs posted a (1-1) record for the day.
In what was a makeup game from earlier in the Summer, it was the Mariners taking it to the Cubs as they dominated from start to finish. While Erick Hernandez got the start, he only went one inning before giving way to Chaily Ramirez, who went on to strike out five in four scoreless innings. The Cubs needed that from him as the Mariners took a 1-0 lead on the Elias Perez single in the second and never looked back. They managed to hold that lead until the sixth when Leandro Romero connected for a two-run shot that made this a 3-0 Mariners lead. That would be all the offense that Cristian Aray would need as he struck out five across seven scoreless innings. Once the seventh inning rolled around, it was the Mariners' offense putting the pedal to the floor as they began to pull away by scoring six more times. Dawel Joseph started things off with a two-run double to make this a 5-0 lead, while a sacrifice fly pushed the Mariners' lead to 6-0. Then came the big blow of the inning as Gabriel Guanchez unloaded for a three-run shot to close out the scoring in the 9-0 Mariners win. With just three hits, runs were challenging to come by for the Cubs as they were handuffed all day. Daniel Campos had one of the hits for the Cubs and was joined by Robin Ortiz and Luis Santos.
Well, there was supposed to be a doubleheader on Monday, only to have the Lightning postpone this game for a later date. When that date remains a mystery, but the only reason it wouldn't be played would be if neither team made the playoffs.
Although this was a weather-shortened game due to Thunderstorms moving through the area, it was a successful game nonetheless as the Cubs managed to take down the Giants 6-1. Looking to bounce back from a series of rough starts, Luis Ghisays looked to be at his old self as he gave the Cubs four innings of one-run baseball, walking two and striking out four. He was backed by an offensive onslaught early that not only got the scoring started in the second, but scored all six of their runs over the next few innings to break things wide open. The first of those runs came in the second as a Jhon Lucena grounder brought home the game's first run while the Elerick Gomez single doubled the Cubs' lead at 2-0. The Cubs' offense continued to push through in the third as Jeury Ramriez's single brought home two more runs for the Cubs, and just like that, this was a 4-0 game. It was in the bottom of the third when the Giants were able to get their only run as a Carlos Concepcion single pulled the Giants within 4-1 as they did what they had to do to keep things close. That would be it when it comes to their offense as the Cubs managed to tack on a run in the fourth on a Juan Cabada single while a fifth inning Ramriez homer closed out the scoring in what was a 6-1 Cubs win. Ramirez had the hot hand at the plate, picking up two hits and driving in three. He was one of four players to record multiple hits and was joined by Freiker Betencourt, Wilfri De La Cruz, and Gomez, who was also credited with the game-winning RBI.DSL MARINERS 9 - DSL CUBS BLUE 0
