Cubs Minor League News: Rookie League |
Talk about an interesting day on the diamond for the Cubs' Rookie League teams.
What started as a full slate of Rookie League games ended with just one game going final, as both DSL games were suspended due to rain and will be made up at a later date. That meant that all of the focus on Monday would gravitate toward the ACL, especially with the Chicago Cubs having a much-needed day off. The only thing better would've been having Shota Imanaga on the mound, but he is making his way to Iowa later this week. Throw in a rough outing from the ACL Cubs, and the Cubs posted a 0-1 record on the diamond on Monday.
The only team that saw its game go final came from Arizona, where the ACL Reds dominated the Cubs 9-1. Most of that offense came in the first five innings, including a five-run fifth inning that broke the game open and put the Reds in a position where they would never look back. Ronny Lopez made the start for the Cubs, and despite pitching 4 1/3 innings, he took it on the chin, allowing five runs on six hits. He did strike out seven but also walked four in what was a shaky start overall. It only took two innings for the Reds to grab the lead as Drew Davies' single put them in front 1-0, and they would never look back. One inning later, it was Jack Moss adding to that lead as his double put the Reds on top 2-0. Following a fourth-inning single from Yeycol Soriano that extended the Reds lead to 3-0, it was the fifth inning when they broke the game open as the Reds scored five more times to open up a massive 8-0 lead. Three of those runs came on a trio of costly errors by the Cubs, as they weren't making things easy on themselves. Soriano would close out that massive inning with his second RBI single in as many at-bats as the Cubs found themselves in a gigantic hole and searching for answers. Trailing 9-0 in the sixth, Ismael Mena put an end to the shutout as his RBI single made this a 9-1 game, which is how things would end.
The theme in the DSL on Monday was rain, rain, and more rain, as both DSL games were suspended. That included DSL Blue, who fell behind by a run early and will pick things up down 1-0 in the third. Elias Perez delivered the lone RBI thus far with a second-inning single that gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead. The Cubs had one hit up to this point, with Daniel Campos picking up that hit.
Not only was the DSL Blue game suspended, but so was DSL Red, as they will resume their game in the fourth inning a month from now with the score tied at 0-0. Luis Ghisays was off to an incredible start on the mound for the Cubs as he set the tone early. Through three innings, Ghisays allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out five as his ERA fell to 1.64. Things didn't come easily for the Cubs offensively either, as they struck out seven times through four innings, with Freiker Bethancourt having the lone hit for the Cubs.ACL Reds 9 - ACL Cubs 1
DSL MARINERS 1 - DSL CUBS BLUE 0 (suspended in third)
