
Roster Moves: Cubs add catcher, place Miguel Amaya on IL |
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Chicago Cubs today selected catcher Reese McGuire from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, catcher Miguel Amaya has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. McGuire will wear uniform #20. McGuire, 30, has played 22 games for the I-Cubs this season, including 13 behind the dish, and is batting .280 (21-for-75) with five doubles, three home runs, 19 RBI, a .467 slugging percentage and a .827 OPS. He has reached base safely in 21 of 22 games this season, including a 13-game streak to start the season and hits in seven of the last eight games. McGuire has caught 17.4% of stolen base attempts and has guided Iowa pitchers to a 4.75 ERA. The Seattle, Wash., native was selected by the Pirates in the first round (14th overall) of the 2013 draft and has played 355 major league games with the Blue Jays (2018-21), the White Sox (2022) and the Red Sox (2022-24). He made his major league debut on September 6, 2018. McGuire was signed by the Cubs to a minor league contract on January 19, 2025. Amaya, 26, is hitting .280 (26-for-93) with nine doubles, four home runs, 25 RBI and a .818 OPS in 27 games for the Cubs this season. He has posted a 25% caught-stealing rate and Cubs pitchers have a 4.37 ERA with him behind the plate. The Cubs play the Cincinnati Reds today at 12:40 p.m. CT at Great American Ball Park in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 the Score and, in Spanish, on WRTO 1200 AM.
