Roster Move: Bears waive starting punter

The Chicago Bears announced that they have waived veteran punter Trenton Gill on Wednesday.

Gill was drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 draft by Ryan Poles.

He had a rough 2023 season, netting only 38 yards per punt, which was last in the league.

After the Bears drafted Iowa star punter Tory Taylor in the fourth round, they decided to make Taylor the starting punter; there was no need to carry two punters.

Taylor was the second-highest-drafted punter since 2012.

Poles recently called Taylor “one of the best punters I’ve ever seen.”

The Aussie had 4,479 punting yards, breaking an 85-year-old NCAA record, and was also named the Ray Guy winner this past season as well as the team's MVP.

103 of Taylor's punts went for 50 or more yards, and he ended with a 46.3 career yard average.
