Cubs make several roster moves |
MESA – The Chicago Cubs today reduced their spring roster from 38 to 31 players.
Infielder Nico Hoerner and left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
Four non-roster invitees have been assigned to minor league camp: right-handed pitchers Shelby Miller, Trevor Megill and Pedro Strop, and outfielder Rafael Ortega. In addition, outfielder Cameron Maybin has been granted his release.
Chicago’s spring roster of 31 players consists of 17 pitchers (which includes two non-roster invitees), three catchers (one non-roster invitee), seven infielders (two non-roster invitees) and four outfielders.
Ross said Bote will be starting 2B.

Hoerner demotion: "less about Nico and more about David Bote."
Would mean Cubs open season with everyday player at every position (no platoon rotations) for first time in recent memory.
The Chicago Cubs have granted Cameron Maybin his release, since he didn’t make the Opening Day roster. He is now a free-agent. #Cubs pic.twitter.com/sYfHtF5b0h
