Cubs Minor League News: Rookie League Monday |
Happy Memorial Day to all, as we use this day to celebrate and remember our loved ones who fought for the great freedoms our country has given us.
While the Cubs were busy disposing of the Colorado Rockies earlier in the day, one minor league affiliate took the field for some nighttime action as the ACL Cubs were back on the diamond after a few days off. It was a much-needed rest for this team as they had gotten off to a horrible start and were sitting at 1-14 through 15 games. Perhaps the rest was just what this team needed to refocus as the Cubs got back to work and posted an 8-6 victory over the ACL Dodgers for their second win of the season. Once again, it was the Anuhar Garcia show as the right-hander is doing what he needs to do to earn a promotion. Garcia gave the Cubs five innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out five. He did walk four as command was sometimes an issue, but he did what he had to do to minimize the damage. The lone run off Garcia came in the third when Kendall Simmons took him deep for a solo shot to make things 1-0. Given that Emmet Sheehan struck out five across two innings, the Cubs were happy to see anyone but him on the mound as Jesus Tillero took over in the third. After tossing a scoreless third, Tillero fell apart in the fourth as the Cubs' offense erupted for seven runs to break the game wide open. Eli Lovich was part of that inning as his massive start to the season continued with a three-run shot that had the Cubs in front 3-1. Hennial Alcala added a single later in the inning to make this a 5-1 game, while the Jan Luis Reyes triple closed out the massive inning and proved to be the game-winning hit with the Cubs in front 7-1. From that moment on, the Dodgers did their best to climb back into this game and, for the most part, accomplished that goal as a fielding error and a wild pitch opened the doors for what was a three-run sixth inning to pull the Dodgers within 7-4. Abel Lorenzo added the final run in that inning with an RBI single, but this game was far from over. The Cubs closed out their scoring by scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, but with an 8-4 lead entering the ninth, it was the Dodgers looking to deliver one last run. Emil Morales and Bryan Gonzalez did their parts as their RBI singles pulled the Dodgers within 8-6, and they were still threatening. That was as close as things would get as the Cubs managed to hold on and picked up their second win of 2025.
