Cubs Corner with Tony Andracki: Cubs comeback, Contracts, Injury report, Predictions

by - Staff Writer -

On this edition of the Cubs Corner, presented by Coach’s Bar and Grill, Anthony welcomes former NBC Sports Chicago’s Cubs beat reporter and current Cubs beat reporter for Marquee Network Tony Andracki to the show.

The pair talked initially about the job change for Tony, before going into depth on the Cubs’ great weekend that included an improbable come-from-behind victory Saturday night and Alec Mills’ no-hitter of the Brewers on Sunday. Andracki mentioned the stories of these two guys and how they encompass the Cubs roster and team unity as a whole — as well as the craziness of 2020.

The group chatted about how in years past, the Cubs have struggled to come back in games and had difficulty building off momentum down the stretch and finishing strong instead of collapsing. Both Anthony and Tony agreed that the comeback win on Thursday, the solid Lester start despite the loss on Friday, the Heyward homer off Hader to fuel a comeback Saturday, and the dominant no-hitter plus 12 run output Sunday heading into an off-day Monday could lead to Cubs to be firing on all cylinders at the exact right time.

You can’t talk about firing on all cylinders, however, without talking about the highs of Jason Heyward, David Bote, Ian Happ, and more, or the struggles of Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Kyle Schwarber and how those players may turn it around, and how those struggles may impact he financial potential of those players contracts.

Tony also offered an injury report on Andrew Chafin, Jose Quintana, and Tyler Chatwood as they all try to aid what has been a top-five bullpen for most of the season down the stretch.

Before the conversation ended, the group made some award and division winner predictions, so make sure to tune in to the Cubs Corner for that and more.

As always, current episodes, past episodes, and future episodes are available on Soundcloud, Apple Podcasts, or the Cubs HQ website.
