Cubs announce their 2020 MLB Draft picks

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs tonight completed the 2020 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Cubs tonight selected left-handed pitcher Burl Carraway out of Dallas Baptist University (second round), outfielder Jordan Nwogu (pronounced Wo-Goo) out of the University of Michigan (third round), left-handed pitcher Luke Little out of San Jacinto College North (fourth round) and right-handed pitcher Koen Moreno out of Panther Creek (N.C.) High School (fifth round).

Carraway was recommended by area scout Todd George, Nwogu was recommended by area scout John Pedrotty, Little was recommended by area scout Trey Forkerway and Moreno was recommended by area scout Billy Swoope.

Carraway, 21, has gone 6-2 with 11 saves and a 2.47 ERA (14 ER/51.0 IP) in his last two seasons at Dallas Baptist, including eight appearances in his shortened 2020 junior campaign. He struck out 89 batters, while walking 28, in 51.0 innings during this span.

The six-foot southpaw was named First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference as a sophomore in 2019, going 4-2 with a 2.81 ERA and a team-high six saves. He struck out 15.72 batters per nine innings, the second-best single-season mark in school history. Following the collegiate season, he pitched with the U.S. Collegiate National Team.

A native of College Station, Texas, Carraway graduated from A&M Consolidated High School where he was a three-time All-District selection.

Nwogu, 21, has batted .334 (147-for-440) with 23 doubles, five triples, 20 homers, 79 RBI and 30 stolen bases in three seasons at Michigan. He has posted a .430 on-base percentage and .545 slugging mark, good for a career .975 OPS. In a shortened 15-game campaign this season, his junior year, he hit .353 (24-for-68) with one double and two homers.

In 2019, Nwogu was selected as an All-Big Ten First Team selection after batting .321 and establishing team-best marks with 58 runs scored, a .557 slugging mark and a .435 on-base percentage. Nwogu was named a Collegiate Baseball News Freshman All-America in 2018.

A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Nwogu graduated from Pioneer High School where he was a Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American in 2017.

Little, 19, struck out 86 batters, while walking 39, in 44.1 innings in two seasons at San Jacinto. In 2019, the six-foot, eight-inch southpaw went 3-1 with two saves and a 2.04 ERA in 35.1 innings, striking out 69 batters.

A native of Matthews, N.C., Little graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, N.C., where he was a 2018 Perfect Game pre-season All-American. He has committed to the University of South Carolina as a junior college transfer.

Moreno, 18, posted five wins and a 1.62 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 47.2 innings of work as a high school junior in 2019. A native of Cary, N.C., he is committed to East Carolina University.

Overall, the Cubs selected three pitchers (two left-handed and one right-handed), one shortstop and one outfielder in this year’s First-Year Player Draft. Additionally, the Cubs selected three college players and two high school players.
