Former Chicago Cubs infielder Munenori Kawasaki announced his retirement from baseball. He was dealing with an Achilles tendon injury and decided it was time to hang up his baseball cleats according to a statement by his team.
In 2017, Kawasaki played professional baseball in the Pacific League with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks. The 36-year old fan favorite hit .333 with an RBI and .462 on-base percentage with the Cubs in 2016. He batted .255 during the year with the Iowa Cubs. For his MLB career, he has .237 average with one homer, 51 RBIs, and .320 on-base percentage. He has had stints with the Cubs, Blue Jays, and Mariners in his pro career. In Japan in 1187 games, he batted .292 with 27 homers, 373 RBIs, and 653 runs.
