CHICAGO (April 16, 2020) – Beginning this week through April 30, Hotel Zachary joins the ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts in Chicago. The boutique neighborhood hotel reopens to provide complimentary accommodations to healthcare workers from Lakeview’s nearby Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
“We are forever grateful for the nurses, doctors and hospital workers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty,” said Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts. “We are proud to help the heroes of Illinois Masonic recuperate after their difficult shifts on the front lines and to help them rest easier knowing they are not exposing their families to the virus.”
The partnership with Advocate Health Care is a result of the Ricketts family’s desire to provide aid during this time in a way that is both impactful and locally focused to valued community partners. Throughout these ongoing discussions, Advocate Health Care expressed priority concern around proper housing for frontline trauma healthcare workers to avoid any possibility of endangering their loved ones at home. Hickory Street Capital, the hotel’s ownership group and a real estate development company, owned by the Ricketts family, and Hotel Zachary worked collaboratively to quickly put measures in place to reopen to the hotel to those healthcare employees.
"Our physicians, nurses and team members are working extremely hard to keep Chicago healthy, and I know many are balancing their passion for their work with protecting their own families," said Susan Nordstrom Lopez, President of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. "Hotel Zachary providing a nearby, welcoming environment for our team members is so appreciated. We thank the entire hotel team for opening up their arms to our caregivers and being a valued community partner in these unprecedented times."
To ensure the health and wellbeing of guests and team members, Hotel Zachary is implementing additional measures for sanitization and disinfection of guestrooms, common areas, and paths of travel, all in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance. In addition, frontline workers will receive the same room for the duration of his or her stay.
Hotel Zachary is bringing back a reduced team of staff, including Pivot Hotels & Resorts management, housekeeping, and 24/7 security to support the limited service available. All team members are following social distancing guidelines and are required to wear personal protective equipment, which will be provided, while working. Hotel Zachary is not open to the general public during this time, and The Bar at Hotel Zachary, as well as many of the Gallagher Way restaurants, excluding McDonald’s and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, remain closed. However, healthcare workers can have food delivered from local restaurants to the hotel.
“As a proud member of the Lakeview community, Hotel Zachary has always been a gathering place for the neighborhood and a home away from home for traveling guests,” said Eric Nordness, senior vice president of Hickory Street Capital. “Given the challenges our community now faces, we are glad to play a role, no matter how small, and support our local hospitals and healthcare workers on the front line of this pandemic.”
Hotel Zachary’s reopening is part of the Chicago Cubs and Hickory Street Capital’s efforts to mobilize the Wrigleyville campus to support ongoing relief efforts as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional support includes utilizing the Wrigley Field concourse as a temporary satellite food packing and distribution center in coordination with Lakeview Pantry.
