MLB Spring training expected to be suspended |
The global pandemic of the Coronavirus is certainly changing things very fluidly including the sports world.
Major League Baseball is expected to be suspended as soon as today according to multiple reports including ESPN's Jeff Passan. "After a conference call among owners this afternoon, Major League Baseball is expected to suspend spring training," Passan posted on social media. "The league likely will delay the beginning of the regular season as well. At this point, it's a formality that ownership-level sources expect to happen." David Ross was asked about the situation on Thursday as he met with reporters. "It's all a little alarming when you are talking about the mass scale," he said. "As far as we go, we will follow instructions from MLB and pay attention to what is going on. We have to do business as usual until we hear something from Major League Baseball." The Cubs have reportedly already taken scouts off the road as they prepare for more cases of coronavirus. Check out the latest information below: Spring training games in Florida and Arizona are expected to be suspended. Hearing from folks in Grapefruit League that spring training is expected to be suspended here. You can add that the #Cubs also are pulling their scouts from the road, if you are keeping score of this. A conference call among Major League Baseball owners is scheduled soon. With the mass cancellations of sporting events around the country, MLB is facing enormous pressure to follow suit. While nothing is official, baseball is expected to have an announcement at some point soon. Nothing official from central baseball yet. Every exec/personnel I talk to today expects an MLB announcement that will impact the playing of spring games and probably regular season start as well. But AGAIN nothing official from MLB office. For anyone questioning MLB's potentially suspending spring training, I'll refer to David Price as he walked into the Dodgers' facility about an hour ago: "It's gotta happen. This is so much bigger than sports. I've got two kids."
That feeling is shared by many, many in the game.
