CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher James Norwood from Triple-A Iowa. Norwood will serve as the “26th man” for this afternoon’s regularly-scheduled game against the New York Mets at Wrigley Field.

Norwood, 24, joins the Cubs for the third time this season. He made his big league debut with the club last month and has gone 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA (2 ER/4.2 IP) in four relief appearances with the Cubs this year. Norwood has gone 2-3 with two saves and a 2.50 ERA (14 ER/50.1 IP) in 40 relief appearances between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa this season. He has struck out 57 batters in 50.1 innings while limiting foes to a .202 batting average and allowing only three home runs.

The righthander began the 2018 campaign with Tennessee and went 1-2 with a 2.48 ERA (9 ER/32.2 IP) in 25 relief outings to earn his first-career promotion to Triple-A on June 25. Norwood was called up to the majors for the first time on July 8. With Iowa, he is 1-1 with a 2.55 ERA (5 ER/17.2 IP) in 15 relief appearances while limiting foes to a .180 batting average, including a .174 mark by lefties and a .184 mark by righties.

A native of New York, NY, Norwood was originally selected by the Cubs in the seventh round of the 2014 Draft out of St. Louis University. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder pitched as both a starter and reliever during his first two years of pro ball before pitching exclusively in relief starting in 2016. Overall, Norwood is 12-15 with 17 saves and a 3.83 ERA (91 ER/214.0 IP) in 138 minor league appearances, all but 15 in relief, covering five seasons in the Cubs minor league system.
