Cubs send two players to minor league camp

The Chicago Cubs announced on Friday that they have sent reliever Dillon Maples and outfielder Mark Zagunis to minor league camp.

During the spring, Zagunis batted .276 going 8-for-29 with seven runs and an RBI. He was going to be a longshot to make the ballclub, but he is one of the more talented prospects for the Cubs. He will get the at-bats he needs down in Triple-A Iowa in the next few months.

Maples had a 0-1 record with a 14.29 ERA over 5.2 innings pitched this spring. He has a 100 MPH fastball but has been very inconsistent with his control the last few weeks. If he can get his regain his command in the minors, look for him to be back with the Cubs at some point in the season. He is a very intriguing prospect with his impressive velocity and wipe-out slider at his disposal.

Eddie Butler or Randy Rosario might have the inside track on the final roster spot as we head closer to the start of the regular season.

Cubs released the following statement on their spring roster, courtesy of Cubs communications.

MESA – The Chicago Cubs today optioned right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples and outfielder Mark Zagunis to Triple-A Iowa. In addition, right-handed pitcher Justin Grimm has been granted his release. Chicago’s spring roster now stands at 37 players.

Chicago’s spring roster of 37 players consists of 18 pitchers (three non-roster invitees), five catchers (three non-roster invitees), 10 infielders (three non-roster invitees) and four outfielders (one non-roster invitee).
