Epstein's message to Schwarber: "Find the hitter"

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber will be sent down to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday.

Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein was on '670 The Score' on Thursday afternoon and had the following positive message for Schwarber.

"I told him, 'This decision is an investment in you," Epstein shared. It's not turning out back on you. It's an investment in you, because we want you back, we need you back. You're going to be right in the middle of everything good that happens here for a long, long time. You just got to find yourself again, find the hitter.'

Epstein also compared Schwarber's start to his career to superstar outfielder Mike Trout.

"Mike Trout had to go back to the minor leagues to get locked in ... before becoming the best player in our game," Epstein said.

In 2017, Schwarber is batting .171 with 12 homers, 28 RBI, and .295 on-base percentage. He has struck out at an alarming rate -- 75 times in 222 at-bats this season and has the lowest batting average for any regular in the majors. Schwarber is also batting a terrible .143 against lefties this season.
