CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to August 20) with left hip tightness and recalled right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples from Triple-A Iowa.

Maples will be available for the Cubs tonight when they begin their four-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.

The 27-year-old Maples has gone 2-3 with nine saves and a 2.41 ERA (10 ER/37.1 IP) in 39 relief outings with Iowa this season. Maples has fanned 71 batters in 37.1 innings, an average of 17.1 strikeouts per nine innings, and has limited opponents to a .147 average. In his last 16 Triple-A outings since May 25, he has allowed just one earned run in 23.2 innings, good for a 0.38 ERA, striking out 49 in 23.2 innings pitched. He joins the Cubs for the fourth time this season (5 ER/3.1 IP, 13.50 ERA, three relief outings).

Maples was originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2011 Draft. He made his major league debut in the final month of last season, allowing six runs in six relief outings (5.1 IP). Overall, he is 15-20 with 33 saves and a 4.26 ERA (134 ER/283.0 IP) in 174 career appearances (all but 30 in relief) covering seven minor league seasons. Last year he struck out 100 batters in 63.1 innings across three minor league levels.

Chatwood, 28, is 4-6 with a 5.22 ERA (59 ER/101.2 IP) in 23 outings with the Cubs this season, 20 as a starter and three in relief.
