Cubs to part ways with Jason Heyward

J-Hey's future in Chicago is done.

Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward will be out the rest of the season with his right knee issue as Jed Hoyer told reporters on Monday that the team is "going to move in a different direction" with Heyward.

Heyward will remain with the club for the rest of the season (inactive list), but he will be released so he can try to get picked up next season on a new team. He will be owed $22 million next season.

"He'a been such a great pro with us and a leader," Hoyer said. "We want to have him around the team with us this year, but we're not going to have him with the team next year.

"We want to give him the full offseason to be able to go out and find an opportunity. And for us, given where we are as a group and where we're going to likely be in the corner outfield next year with Seiya (Suzuki) and Ian (Happ) we're going to move in a different direction."

Heyward was placed on the IL on June 30 with a knee injury.

He batted .204 with a homer and 10 RBIs for the Cubs this season. In his career with the Cubs, he hit .242 with 62 homers.
