CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs have placed infielder Nico Hoerner (left forearm strain) and right-handed pitchers Jake Arrieta (right thumb abrasion, retroactive to May 3) and Dan Winkler (right triceps tendinitis, retroactive to May 3) on the 10-day injured list.. The team has recalled left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan and right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson, and selected infielder Ildemaro Vargas, from Triple-A Iowa.

Ryan, 29, has appeared in two games across two stints for Chicago this season. The lefthander has not allowed a run in 2.2 innings pitched, along with three hits, a walk, and two strikeouts.

Ryan is in his fourth season with the Cubs organization after signing with the club on December 29, 2017. The lefthander appeared in 18 games in 2020, going 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA (9 ER/15.2 IP), four holds and one save. In 2019, Ryan went 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA (24 ER/61.0 IP) and 14 holds, while limiting left-handed hitters to a .226 average (21-for-93) in a career-high and team-leading 73 games.

Thompson, 26, made his major league debut Sunday in Cincinnati tossing a scoreless inning. The Cubs third round pick in the 2017 draft out Auburn University, Thompson is 10-10 with a 3.46 ERA (61 ER/158.2 IP) with 151 strikeouts in 35 career games (29 starts) in the minor leagues.

Thompson was twice named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week in 2019, for the weeks of May 21-27 (0 R/6.0 IP) and June 11-17 (0 R/7.0 IP).

Vargas, 29, begins his second stint with the Cubs as he appeared in two games (0-for-2) while on the major league roster from April 13-16.

Claimed off waivers from Minnesota September 5 of last season, Vargas hit .222 (2-for-9) with a solo home run in six games for the Cubs. All told, last season he appeared in 24 games between Arizona, Minnesota and Chicago, hitting .196 (10-for-51) with a double, a triple, a home run and three RBI.

Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela by St. Louis in 2008, Vargas made his major league debut with Arizona in 2017 and has batted .252 (72-for-286) with 11 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 35 RBI with the Diamondbacks (2017-20), Twins (2020) and Cubs (2020-21).

Arrieta, 35, has gone 3-3 with a 4.31 ERA (15 ER/31.1 IP) in six starts for the Cubs this season. He has walked 12, struck out 28 and allowed three of fewer runs in each of his first five outings.

Hoerner, 23, has batted .389 (14-for-36) with six doubles and seven RBI in 11 games for Chicago, walking eight times compared to seven strikeouts.

Winkler, 31, is 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA (1 ER/10.2 IP) in 13 relief appearances for Chicago, walking seven, striking out 12 and recording a 1.13 WHIP.
