CINCINNATI - There were a total of 31 points scored in the fourth quarter of the Chicago Bears’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals and a total of at least 17 points scored in every quarter.

This game was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of game, an epic shootout that ended with a Chicago Bears victory.

“Speaking to (head coach Ben Johnson) throughout the week, we knew that this is an explosive offense. They can score at any moment. They can score. He said it before the game, day before the game or so that we get up by two touchdowns, don’t feel good or comfortable or anything like that. That’s what they did today. They made plays and we knew it was going to be a shootout. We knew it was going to be one of those games and obviously, we have to play better on different sides of the ball and things like that,” quarterback Caleb Williams said. “But, us coming through in this way, I think this has been really the only way that we haven’t this year and so, being able to show all the variety of ways to win the game that we can is really important for our confidence as an offense, as a team and things like that and the guys after the game. It doesn’t matter that they put up how many points they put up. We’re all excited for this win. This is a big moment for us. To be able to go into this next quarter of the season 5-3.”

This game is the first in Williams’ NFL career where Chicago scored at least 40 points. He also had his first two NFL receptions, the first of those for a two-yard touchdown early in the game. Despite getting his team a 14-point lead with 2:24 left in the game, Cincinnati took a 42-41 lead with under a minute left in the game. But the Bears did not give up. Instead, Williams engineered a game-winning drive, capped off by a 58-yard touchdown to rookie tight end Colston Loveland.

That final play was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for Williams, who was worried the Bears could run out of time if he did not score.

“In that moment, I was a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster just because it was around 30 seconds or around that time and you throw that pass and you want to get in field goal range and get down, clock it and then kick the game-winning field goal. Colston made a great play, o-line blocked well, threw a solid ball to Colston,” Williams said. “He made a great play for us, bouncing off a few tackles and taking it the distance and so, in that moment, it’s like Steph Curry with Steve Kerr where it’s like, ‘Oh no, no, no, no. Yes, yes, yes.’ So, that’s where I was in that moment and like I said, Colston made a great play for us. That’s why he’s here.”

Against the Bengals this past Sunday was not the first time Chicago had to overcome adversity to come out with the win.

This game, when considered alongside the Bears’ other hard-fought wins, such as against the Las Vegas Raiders and Washington Commanders, demonstrates the grit this team possesses.

“That’s what we are. When things don’t go our way, when adversity hits, we find ways to win for each other. That’s it. I think that’s what it’s been this year,” Williams said. “Offense not scoring, defense shows up. Defense and offense may give up a touchdown, special teams puts us in good field position and we kick game-winners and things like that. Today, we have to put up a bunch of points to be able to help our brothers and I think us doing that today builds confidence in those guys on the other side of the ball. Obviously our side, but the other side of the ball, building confidence that they know that we have their back.”
