Adbert Alzolay injury update

This is not good news for a fan favorite.

Chicago Cubs closer Adbert Alzolay will have Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the 2024 season.

"He's certainly made a big effort to come back and put a lot of work in trying to pitch this year," Craig Counsell told the media Wednesday. "In the end, he tried and it was not possible to do it. He's gotta get this fixed and go down the rehab route and get strong and ready to pitch again."

The timeline for his UCL reconstruction surgery will take at least 12 months to recover, so the reliever might miss a portion or all of 2025, depending on how his rehab goes.

In 18 games this season, he had four saves with a 4.67 ERA.
