Cubs recall Dillon Maples, option reliever

PHOENIX – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples from Triple-A Iowa. Left-handed pitcher Randy Rosario was optioned to Triple-A following yesterday’s game. Maples will be available for the Cubs tonight when they begin their three-game series at the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Maples, 26, is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA (3 ER/8.0 IP) in seven relief outings with Iowa this season. He has struck out 16 batters in 8.0 innings and limited foes to a .077 batting average while walking eight. He returns to the Cubs for this first time this season after spending parts of the last two years in the big leagues, going 1-0 with a 10.97 ERA (13 ER/10.2 IP) in 15 relief outings, as he has recorded 20 strikeouts and issued 11 walks in 10.2 innings pitched.

The righthander went 2-3 with 10 saves and a 2.79 ERA (12 ER/38.2 IP) in 41 appearances with Iowa last season, striking out 75 batters in 38.2 innings pitched and limiting foes to a .162 batting average.

Maples was originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2011 Draft. Overall, he is 15-21 with 34 saves and a 4.28 ERA (139 ER/292.1 IP) in 183 career appearances (all but 30 in relief) covering eight minor league seasons. Over the last three seasons, he has struck out 191 batters in 110.0 innings across three minor league levels.

Rosario, 24, has posted no record and a 6.43 ERA (5 ER/7.0 IP) in eight relief appearances with the Cubs this season.
