Former Cubs infielder Daniel Murphy signs with Long Island Ducks

Former Chicago Cub and star infielder Daniel Murphy has found a new home in the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

The team announced the signing of the 36-year-old Murphy on social media, as he attempts to make a comeback to the big leagues.

“This game is part of my soul, and my passion for playing grew as great as ever when I discovered certain things that I believe will enable me to be productive on the field again,” said Murphy in a press release.

“I am immensely grateful to Mr. Boulton, Wally Backman and Michael Pfaff for allowing me to live my dream for a second time.”

Murphy was a key player for the Cubs in the 2018 season, but injuries and a decline in production limited his playing time in the following seasons with the Rockies in 2019 and 2020.

The Ducks, based in Central Islip, New York, provide an opportunity for Murphy to showcase his skills and potentially catch the attention of MLB teams looking for a veteran infielder with a proven track record of success.

“Competing before the New York fans is an enormous privilege, and I hope that my effort and performance reflect how honored I am to do so,” Murphy added.

“The sincerest thanks from my family and I to the Long Island Ducks for this chance at a new adventure.”

During his time in the majors, Murphy has been a consistent and productive hitter.

He is a career .296 hitter with 138 home runs and 735 RBIs over 12 seasons with the Mets, Nationals, Cubs, and Rockies. He is also a three-time All-Star and a two-time Silver Slugger award winner.
