Tensions flared in St. Louis on Thursday night when Cardinals first baseman and former Cubs catcher Willson Contreras exchanged heated words with Chicago closer Daniel Palencia following the Cubs’ win.

The spark?

Palencia drilled Contreras with a pitch in the ninth inning, leading to a tense postgame interaction between the two.

Contreras later addressed the situation, offering an apology to his former team.

“My reaction was bad,” Contreras said. “I apologize to the Chicago Cubs for the way I reacted… I don’t want to fight them.”
