WATCH: Ben Johnson sets expectations for training camp |
Head coach Ben Johnson addressed the media on Tuesday at Halas Hall and talked about some of team's goals.
"You talk about where we're at as a team, what training camp means and it's just another step for what we're building," Johnson said to reporters. "The foundation's already being put in place in the springtime; we're looking to build on that as we go over the course of camp. Competition I think exists at all levels of our roster. It's going to bring out the best in all our guys … There are certain battles that we've already highlighted that might take precedence over the course of camp, but I think everything's open. I'm really excited to see where that leads." Watch the press conference below: Video summary/cliff notes: Excitement & Gratitude for New Start (00:00–00:43) Johnson expresses excitement for training camp, thanks ownership, staff, and players—many of whom reported early and came in strong and prepared. Camp Goals: Trust & Fundamentals (01:11–01:53) The team is building on spring’s foundation, with goals of mastering fundamentals, installing the playbook, and focusing on situational football. "Thunderbirds" Analogy for Team Trust (01:53–03:25) He compares the team’s journey to Thunderbird pilots needing trust in formation—highlighting the importance of consistency and dependability. Focus on Day-by-Day Growth (03:48–04:11) Emphasizes daily improvement—“brick by brick”—and cautions against panic during inevitable ups and downs in camp. Preseason Benchmarks & Caleb's Progress (04:34–05:37) Joint practices vs. Miami and Buffalo will help gauge progress. Johnson set a lofty goal for rookie QB Caleb Williams: 70% completion on the season. Leaning on Experienced Coaches (06:00–06:23) As a first-time head coach, he plans to rely on veteran coaches for advice and support, especially in game management. Developing Team Identity (06:49–07:09) The team aims to be explosive, detailed, physical, and poised—but the true identity will emerge during camp through competition and reps. Open Competition at Left Tackle (07:27–08:47) While Braxton Jones has experience, the left tackle position is wide open. Every rep in this three-man battle matters, and Darnell Wright will stay at right tackle. Quarterback Foundation & Situational Mastery (09:22–12:44) Johnson discusses Caleb's development—building from the ground up with pre-snap routines, footwork, and timing. He emphasizes "teaching through reps" to prepare for in-game decision-making. Six-Week Race to Readiness (13:07–14:25) Johnson views the next six weeks as a race to build fundamentals, team chemistry, and install both offensive and defensive systems. Preseason games will be critical for evaluating staff and player decision-making.
