Cubs recall righty reliever

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples from Triple-A Iowa. Maples will be available for the Cubs this afternoon when they begin their three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field. Chicago’s active roster now stands at 37 players.

Maples, 27, joins the Cubs for the fifth time this year, as he has gone 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA (7 ER/9.1 IP) in 11 relief appearances with the Cubs during his first four stints. He has limited foes to a .182 batting average (6-for-33) with 10 walks and 14 strikeouts in 9.1 innings. He went 4-4 with seven saves and a 3.77 ERA (18 ER/43.0 IP) in 38 outings with Iowa this season, striking out 79 while walking 46 in 43.0 innings and limiting foes to a .145 batting average.

The righthander has spent parts of the last three years in the big leagues with the Cubs, going 2-0 with an 9.00 ERA (20 ER/20.0 IP) in 26 relief outings, as he has recorded 34 strikeouts and issued 21 walks in 20.0 innings.

Maples was originally selected by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2011 Draft. Overall, he is 19-24 with 41 saves and a 4.23 ERA (154 ER/327.1 IP) in 214 career appearances (all but 30 in relief) covering eight minor league seasons. Over the last three seasons, he has struck out 254 batters in 143.0 innings across three minor league levels.
