Report: Hector Rondon to sign with AL team

The Houston Astros have signed former Cubs reliever Hector Rondon on Friday according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.

Rondon chose the Astros over the Nationals and the Rays.

The Cubs did not tender a contract to reliever Hector Rondon last month making him a free agent.

Rondon was to earn around $6.2 million after arbitration and the Cubs decided that money was better spent elsewhere. His salary in 2017 was $5.8 million.

In 2017, Rondon had a 4.24 ERA with 69 strikeouts and 1.22 WHIP. Rondon was not added to the postseason until the NLCS so this decision today was certainly a possibility. There is a chance that the Cubs and Rondon decide to re-up with each other during free agency period but it would be at a much cheaper rate.

During his 4-year major league career in 296 appearances, he has a 3.22 ERA with 77 saves, 18-13 record, 303 strikeouts, and 1.13 WHIP. He was selected by the Cubs from the Indians in the 2012 Rule 5 draft.
