In a surprising turn of events, David Montgomery, the former star running back of the Chicago Bears, has unleashed his true feelings towards his former team after signing with the Detroit Lions in free agency.
"That’s all I was used to," Montgomery said of the Bears’ losing in a recent video on the Lions' official site. “And it got to a point where it sucked the fun out of the game for me because I’m a competitor. I like to compete. That’s what football’s about. It’s so refreshing to be in a place where that’s appreciated.”
These remarks were made during an interview on Lions Gaming: Live with C.J. Gardner-Johnson, shedding light on his discontent with the Bears organization.
Montgomery played a premier role in their offense during his four-year tenure with the Bears.
However, despite his individual success, the team's overall performance declined towards the end of his time in Chicago. While the Bears reached the playoffs in 2020, they subsequently posted disappointing records of 6-11 and 3-14 in the following two seasons.
In his 60 games with the Bears, Montgomery amassed an impressive 3,609 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns, leaving an indelible mark on the franchise's recent history.
However, with the Bears undergoing a complete roster overhaul, Montgomery chose to join the up-and-coming Lions, who were on the cusp of a playoff berth last year.
He now looks forward to contributing as a key member of the Lions' backfield alongside promising rookie Jahmyr Gibbs, providing him with renewed hope for success.
As fate would have it, the NFC North rivals, the Bears and the Lions, are scheduled to face each other twice in the upcoming 2023 season. This presents a perfect opportunity for Montgomery to seek revenge on his former team and prove his worth in his new Lions jersey.
Conversely, the Bears will undoubtedly be motivated to show Montgomery what he is missing out on and demonstrate the strides they have made since his departure.
